All about Jello, January 2007

I want to go clean my house right now, but i guess not THAT bad, since i'm giving in to all you crazy curious people and giving you the entire scoop on my secret life of jello art. Angie, Colony & James, thank you for helping me come out of the closet. this will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. however, i may leave out some details in order to protect those i no longer love.

So, i have this friend, diana. She was an art student at the u of o a hundred years ago. well, less than that really. she's fun and quirky and brings out my crazy wild side. gotta love her for that. she's one of those people i had an instant bond with because she always always always makes me laugh. we had been friends for a few months. i had the tv on one of those channels with local announcements and stuff. i'm not sure why--maybe it played good music or something, but i doubt it. anyway, i saw something about 'jellorama' on april fools day at maude kerns art center. naturally, the first person i thought of who i knew would enjoy something artsy and bizarre was diana!

We attended our first jellorama in 1995. people were wearing crazy cool costumes, they were serving jello food product, there was music and entertainment, and there were several wild and amazing jello art displays--we had found our niche! we were in love! (with jellorama, not each other). jello brought us together as no other substance could. plans began immediately for the following year. we just HAD to be involved.

Later in 1995, d met enoch. i must say i knew they were a perfect match from the first time i met him. he has been an integral part of our jello team. without him, well, our art would just not be the same. he's been our technical advisor, art expert, mechanic, jello mixer, contraption builder, supporter, and photographer.

Jell-o turns 100!!!1996--our first year at jellorama (which happens to be the name of the event that first year and it stuck with us, so if you don't like it or want to argue it, too bad. that's what it's going to be). 13 bowls of yellow jello were turned into a beautiful piece of art entitled, 'which came first'. it was a cube of jello with a box of jello suspended inside. pure genius, enoch! :)d & i chose silver dresses for our ensemble. we were just too stunning for words. somehow (the cosmos musta been on our side) our costumes fit right in with those 'running the show'. we were all dressed up in our silvery goodness. i've got some great pix, but most of them are archived in the museum of jello art history. we were mentioned in the register guard. everyone loved us and begged us for more. we couldn't let them down. they needed us. we had to return.

well, d & e decided to move to seattle, so our fans had to wait until y2k to see us again as happy little housewives, serving up a plate of jello steak &potatoes, peas & carrots with jello for dessert. the theme that year happened to be western, but i think we fit in nicely with our 'manly' meal.

2001- A spaced oz-dessy. Finally i had an opportunity to dress like dorothy! i have always wanted a dorothy costume and ruby slippers. isn't that every girl's dream? we created the emerald city within a crystal ball with our rainbow just behind it. ah, dreams really do come true. we made it on the 11:00 news!

2003- My little bug was born just months before Jellovision, the 15th annual show. In running with that, we opted for the theme of 'sugar jello fairies dancing through my head', complete with scary fairy costumes and a quilt and mobile made with jello.

2004- time for funky jello. this is where i look like liza minnelli. not the look i was going for, but perhaps there is some strange cosmic connection with dorothy and the rainbow and me after all (or is it kermit the frog?). We took some funky shoes and gave them a new jello heel and straps. nothing i would actually wear--the jello got a little melty.

2005- Have i mentioned that the costumes are just as much fun as the jello art for us? have i also mentioned that nobody ever really dresses up for these events, except the radar angels who put the whole gig on? well, and the slug queen, when he/she makes an appearance. this was our 10th anniversary of attending/dispaying at the jello art show, so we thought we should show ourselves off a bit. we made a mirrored dance floor with jello squares and disco balls. cutouts of ourselves from the past jellorama's were the 'guests' and photos of all our previous work were on display for all to see. we were sportin' some fine feathered hair & flashy orange dresses. ok, mine was a caftan (weird, but fun to wear) and d had a saucy little number on. we wore our silver shoes in honor of our first year. enoch kinda looked like our pimp--but we'll just call him 'charlie'. ha! i think someone called us jello sirens. that works.y

2006- the joys of jello! this year called for rainbow clown wigs (i had to beg and beg and beg diana to wear them) and some sequins, but we were pretty toned down. enoch made us a lighted cylinder to layer a rainbow of jello & glittery prizes for display. we just couldn't stop touching it!

Is our art the best? um, no. do we have the most fun? absolutely! there are some truly amazing jello artisans out there who will blow your mind! there's always fun and entertainment by the radar angels & us, jello shots, and a tacky food buffet, so come meet us at maude kerns the first saturday in april (closest to the 1st) for jellorama!

'i love being an april fool. fools take chances and run risks and explore new territories and have so much fun. my life is a dance to be enjoyed.' --a calander page april 1, 2000.
